Adding on to what ruby said, I think everyone played/practiced well today :D *vigorously claping* and it was a very pleasant atmosphere for sectionals today~ (must be shiyun's house ROFL)

Hey! Today (22 November 2009)! Some of us (majority of the section, except juniors, Jaime, and Yunhan) went to Shiyun's house for sectionals! With our guest flute player, Litat:D. Also, we had our dearest tutor, Miss Chang, to help us along:D

I must say, I'm really happy...and I think today's really special. Thank you all! For working so hard! I guess it really kinda bonded us together even more yeah?

And of course, thank you MISS CHANG! Haha!!! I dunno, words cannot really describe how grateful we all are to you!

Storyline: Ministers have successfully purged the new breed of soldiers from using dialect, therefore all only speak English and Mandarin/their mother tongue. Band Test coming up!

Hi all! As you guys already know, there is no practice till further notice due to the H1N1 crisis.

We feel that this period is the best time for everyone to train and get back to their basics so we're having a mini basic test when band resumes. Please practice hard!

What will be tested:

- 7 Basic Major Scales - Ab,Bb,C,D,Eb,F,G.

- 7 Basic Major Arpeggios - Ab,Bb,C,D,Eb,F,G.

- Chromatic Scales starting on any note.

- Basic Rhythm Test.

- Score Reading.

Also, there is Arts Fiesta rehearsals in the first week when school reopens!
Attendance is COMPULSORY! and we hope to achieve FULL ATTENDANCE!

Rehearsal days are on the TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY of the first week of school.

See you all then!

Meanwhile, PRACTICE HARD! REST WELL! DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

Hey people, we did it yeah? Yeah, some of us made some petty mistakes up there on stage but we did the best we could and we overcame our stage fright together and played the best we could.

Here's the award we've achieved. :D

We did well. But let's not be complacent, like what Faith says.

And also, we really should thank our beloved alumni yeah? They've been really supportive of us...coming down now and then to help us and stuff!

Whenever I try to post my english translation of the chinese newspaper, it always misses out the spacing, arghhh. So I'm posting it separately here.

I'm trying my best to translate and pardon me if I didn't phrase it properly 'cos I translated it directly... so it sounds a little blunt, haha.

Three bands perform with "chefs"

The exhilirating performance, "Ignited", of three bands made the 140-strong audience screaming for more... "Encore!".

Shuqun Secondary, Hougang Secondary and Regent Secondary had their first collaboration in a concert together on 11 November 2008 at Victoria Concert Hall, under the baton of Mr lim Yean Hwee, belting out exciting tunes.

First up was Shuqun Secondary. The audience indulged themselves in the song, "Early One Morning", 'Invention No. 1" and "Blue Ridge Saga". Next, Hougang Secondary brought compelling tunes such as "Sinfonia Nobilissima" and "The Light Eternal". Regent Secondary performed Eiji Suzuki's "Ballet music from 'Macbeth'" and the familiar tune from Disney's "Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs"'s "Whistle While You Work". The climax of the concert brought audience screaming for encore.

The three bands performed a novelty, "Variations on a Kitchen Sink". Members brought pots, pans, rubbish bins, many different utensils found in the kitchen onto the stage and bang their way through the song, with accompaniment by the combined band. While members were having fun on stage performing, the audience clapped along to the song.

"This is my first time watching bands performing with 'chefs'! It's a fresh and unique experience!", commented Neo Hui Juan, a Secondary 2 student of Regent Secondary School.

When interviewing music director, Mr Lim Yean Hwee, he said, "The theme of this concert is 'Ignited'. The bands are just like a dynamite. When the fire has been lit, we have to work harder to achieve our goal/the perfect ignition - creating beautiful fireworks. This performance has allowed the members to gain much valuable experience in preparation for the Singapore Youth Festival in 2009."

We wish the three bands all the best in the future, hoping that they will soar to greater heights!

$20 bill

Sometimes we just need to be reminded!

A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20.00 bill. In the room of 200, he asked,

'Who would like this $20 bill?'

Hands started going up. He said,

'I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this.'

He proceeded to crumple up the $20 dollar bill, then asked,

'Who still wants it?'

Still the hands were up in the air. Well, he replied,

'What if I do this?'

And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty.

'Now, who still wants it?'

Still the hands went into the air.

My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20.

Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value.

Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who
DO LOVE you.

The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE and WHOSE WE ARE.

You are special - Don't EVER forget it.'

Count your blessings, not your problems.

NYJC Concert and ..

Hey all! NYJC will be having a free concert in NJYC at 3pm, at LT4. No tickets required so just needa go there and watch! Go watch! Go support YUNHAN, Shuanyong and Jackson. :D

Alright, and, please start practicing concert F major (our G major) scale with tonguing. Please try to tongue as fast as you can, if possible up to 178 quavers okay? Also, continue trying out how to double tongue. Practice without instrument first, then when you think or feel you're stable enough, give a shot using your instrument. This very serious. So when you read this, don't just push it aside and pretend you practiced this homework. Really practice it. After self-practice alone, we may have to have one day for sectional to try this out together as a section so please do this homework. Also, don't leave your Whistle While You Work, Hawaii Five-O, Overture No.1&2 for Wind Band, Sinfonia Brevis and Tribute out. Do start practicing them. Mr Lim mentioned practicing the second movement of Sinfonia Brevis so do it. Also, try to remember whatever Mr Lin had taught us for those 2 sessions he had with us. Practice and complete Mr Lin's homework as well - Practice 20 Tune Ups until you can play it fast without mistakes. Okay, happy practicing see you'll soon.

Hi All,

Camp had just finished and I hope everyone had enjoyed it.

Although these 3 days were short, I could see that you all had grown up a lot. I am really pleased to see a scattered section to unite to a section where everyone cares for each other when others are in need. It dosen't matter who won the best group,no matter what,my clarinetists will always be the best in my eyes.

Now that the sec 4s are graduating, it's time for the sec 3s going sec 4s to lead the section and to take care of your juniors.
Your band journey does not stop here, there will be more events coming up and I hope this spirit will continue.

Reminiscing or maybe Emo-ing

Maybe this might come out as very random to most of you, but i really would like to voice out what I'm feeling as of recently. I'm quite sad (as in really sad) of what has become of our section both in real life or blog. From an army of clarinetists(24 people in full strength including bass clarinets) it has become 7. But i'm upset not because of the huge drop in the quantity of players, Its the SPIRIT. SPIRIT of the section or individual players.

Since when had sectionals been getting lesser and lesser? from the time when I've been around, the extra sectionals that have been organised (on thursdays most of the time and extra days when everyone is free) to practice more as a section and together. If you had realised (for the seniors that have been around), that it had subconsciously brought our section more together. It may be tiring yes, but we always had fun together be it crapping or getting serious to practice for our pieces. remember the tears or unhappiness when we felt when we have played lousy for feast day? or the whoops of joy when we've finally get the right feeling and style of playing leroy anderson portrait. It might be due to many reasons I guess, but I feel that we are less like a family already.

Last time everyone anticipated section outing and wanted to go willingly, just to spend time with each other outside band too. Look back in the archives and see our first outing, as compared to the one recently which we went to east coast park. There's so much different in the turn out rate, it makes people wonder why has it become like this? Even the section tee this year, why do some of us have to keep chasing and asking for it? the poll results for the colours have long been up there, but there hasn't been any news about it. I'm not scolding all of you, But the point is why something like that which people do on their own accord, because they want and feel inclined to do become a burden? This makes the whole thing meaningless, because its supposed to be something that everyone wants, not only a minority of the whole section.

And lastly, our blog. I went back and looked at the archives, from the first post when the section blog has been created to recently. Its very sad in some sense, but still brings smiles to my face. Be it those random pictures taken during sectionals to spice up the blog, or the endless encouragement from the seniors or just about anyone in the section, who really cared and want improvement. Or reminders of attires and taking care of your health, notes for pieces which are most crucial, for Addiction I, Addiction II, SYF or exchanges etc. There had never been a time where everything lay stagnant, that needs urgings for new posts to keep the blog alive. So its really sad, to have something like this to happen now. I guess as time goes by, people forget. Not many people realised that..is it really worth it to let everything go down now? This blog seemed to have lost its purpose, a place where each of us from the section had gathered even when we go home. Just to share laughter or thoughts, or anything that we feel would have brighten everyone's day with.

And all of this..is what i meant by spirit of section or individual players. Its been a long time since i've nagged like this, i hope everything goes in yup (its for your own good..!) and everyone make it a point to read. All of above that I've typed, is not to scold you or tell you where you did wrong. Its to bring your attention to something which we are almost losing. So what we have to do now is build everything up again. I know I have not been there for you all as much as before, and I'm really sorry about it. I'll start to go back and haunt you all as much as I can, SOON. So be prepared =) let us all give our section, blog and everything a meaning again alright?

Hello all, sec 1s-3s who came for band practice today, I'm sure you all know what happened right? An Chun had combined with seniors. I hope you all remember what he's taught us. When we start the piece, don't start so harshly. We must have balance within ourselves and have a section sound. We all have tuners infront of our stands so pleasee, make good use of them. As for the juniors, please practice hard for your What a Wonderful World. POP is next saturday! Please work hard. And if Miss Jama gives you guys breaks, please DO NOT run to the canteen to buy cup noodles. It is very rude to do so. We have improved alittle bit today:) though our attendace is really really poor ): Well its okay, we'll aim to work harder tomorrow and the other practices right? Dear juniors, please don't blame yourselves. Nobody is to be blamed. Its everyone's fault you see. Try to understand:D We love you guys alot, and we appreciate that you guys love us too:D. We have to improve together as a section and band, and to do so, we must practice hard. 10 minutes a day is good enough. So please stop being lazy and start working. Together, we'll have a passionate band spirit.

Oh yes, our POP and competition is coming soon, 21 June and 23 July respectively. Lets work harder, practice harder, go for band more often ( Mr Lim tells you how we can improve on our pieces, mind you), actually try to remember whatever Mr Lim/ An Chun/ Faith/ YunHan/ Elene has taught us these past few weeks yeah? And please please please, read your scores often even if you are sick. Remember to listen to AIRS and Chorale and Shaker Dance songs 5 times a day. If you don't have the song, you can ask it from me. Please memorise L to the end for Chorale and Shakers Dance by Monday! We still have a few hours to prove Mr Lim wrong! We want to take part in the competition right? And like what YunHan said, no use coming for band if you don't have the passionate band spirit or the learning attitude. And what Elene said, we must take this chance and turn around and walk towards some really beautiful meadow. To summarize it all, please PRACTICE. DON'T PRACTICE WRONGLY! Not sure? Thailand trip is over :( but i am sure we all all had fun chatting and shopping ya?haha.At least it gave me lots of memories..

Next up will be the July Competition!which is 53 more days.If i am not wrong,You all should be playing AIRS & Chorales And Shaker Dance.Although the sec 4s will not be joining you all,I hope that all will put in your effort and contribute to the section.I think everyone should strive even harder and do better next time around.

Do you find band rehearsal BORING?

Ever wondered why?
Because YOU are the cause of it

Wouldn't it be more fun and enjoyable if Mr Lim don't keep stopping to correct us? We played badly, Mr Lim got angry, you find it "sian, Mr Lim angry again" then you got sick of band because its so boring as we always didnt play through a piece well - always stopping here and there. Play the same old part over and over again with the same mistake. At most we only got it right after Mr Lim told us for that particular rehearsal then its a complete wiped off on the next rehearsal and the cycle continues again and again. Of course will sian right?

So, EVERYONE MUST PRACTICE AS EVERYONE PLAYS A PART.
NOBODY CAN PUSH YOU WHEN YOU DON'T WANT TO MOVE ON.

-a band is as weak as its weakest player.
think carefully about what you had just read.

first time posting. hi all~~
i know that some of you all sqeak a lot, just like me hehehhhh. well its common but its better if you try and fix it,otherwise people will hear unpleasant sounds. very high pitched sounds. so . here are some of the reasons that makes us sqeak:

1.Reeds.
some of your reeds, they are very soft/thin. if ur reeds are soft/thin,sound will come out very easily and no only you will sound flat but you will sqeak., because air comes out really easily and sometimes, you may sqeak if you just play louder. like just me~~and some of you all~~~your reeds are damaged. please change your reeds if they are chipped because chipped reeds make you sqeak.ya. and its horrible when clarinets sqeak. we ourselves cant bear the sound. so change it. if you often have your reeds chipped, PLEASE TAKE GOOD CARE OF THEM~~~~

2.Embouchure
some of your embouchures are too tight or too loose.if its too tight,ur lower lip will press against the reed and sound may not be able to go through the clarinet from your mouth because there is no gap between the mouthpiece and the reed and hence,restrcting the tone. this causes sqeaks.so so loosen if you think you are biting tooo hard. its may help.but if your mouths are too loose,air may escape from your gaps from your mouths. and this results to insufficient air to go through your clarinet. ya this causes sqeak too,try to tighten if you are too loose.

3.Air
some of you all may play the clarinet with a unstable air/slow air speed. this causes sqeaks too. so play your clarinets with a straight air, and faster air speed to let air go through the whole of your clarinet. it can sqeak because there is not enough air~~~ ya and one thing. i found this piece of information on the net that is useful and true. use ur stomach to breathe. i mean breathe deep down, it can help you with more air so you can sustain notes longer. ya.

4.sitting/standing posture.
sitting posture affects your playing.sit up straight. don't slouch, slouching makes you look not really good but it also sqeeze your organs in your body together and this makes air difficult to go to your lungs. sit up straight.air can flow in more easily with your back/posture straight.

5.cheeks.
some of us puff cheeks when playing the clarinet, don;t puff your cheeks, it shows that there is air in your mouth and the air you exerted into the clarinet is not straight, and air should go through the clarinet,not stay in your mouths. ya. so don't puff your cheeks. it wil sound flat and it looks unglam. so puffing of cheeks are better for puffer fish.

6.Fingers
some people got tiny little small fingers. yes they are cute but they are not enough to cover some of the clarinet holes fully. not covering the holes properly can causes sqeak which ergh, everyone detests, so try and feel the holes ya. you will get used to pressing the holes without looking at the holes. juniors, this is a good piece of information. cover the holes properly.

7.Ligature
when setting up instrument, try not to turn the screws of your ligature too tight. it may cause squeaks. ya so try to loosen it if you are turning them too tight. ya.

8,instrument spoil.
if you find that your instruments squeak all the time and you fixed what you are supposed to fix, try to consult a more senior band mate to help you check with your instrument, see if theres are key pads that are stuck, or any key that is spoilt.

9.Tongues
when playing a accent or a staccato, some of you all will tend to tongue very hard. yes,an accent means strong but sometimes an accent can be done with your air, so is staccato. use ur air to make it sound like a tingue. this way, squeaks may be heard lessen,use air to "tongue" it might help.if you don't know how to use air to tongue,come to me.i might know how to teach you,

10.Mouth muscles
i notice that some of you all leak air from the sides oof you mouths, hmmm.i do that too. try and cose your mouth fully and don't let them escape because it causes squeaks and it may cause air to escape from your mouth and air will then be insufficient for your playing.

above are some of the reasons for you and me to squeak. ya. hope you read about it. i know its long buy try to read it. i got some of these at some useful websites.if there is any typing errors, i'm sorry. ya.

Due to Liyin's request for the BBQ list to stay at the top, i will shorten this post. The rest can be read at the band web =) haha.

You all had been a wonderful section, we've had happy as well as sad times. I think the most thing i will miss from the whole band is our section le. All of you have always given me a reason to smile, to continue to teach and i had always been very proud of all of you. No matter how much i have to scream my lungs out to conduct sectionals or stop the fish market from continuing. Haha, give me a a reason to continue doing so =) the sec 1s are going to be seniors soon. you all must bond with your seniors, the clarinets have always been a family. And will always remain a family. The army of clarinets will prevail! I will definitely come back, at least once a week when school starts. Work hard! recruit more juniors next year, at least six is the best =)

Hey gals, don't cry anymore. My heart really aches when I see all of you cry ANOTHER ROUND after you have stopped crying. We will have loads of fun during the chalet! WOOOO! Eat all you want, play all you want! :D

Great job for "Addiction II"! Especially the hat and the shaking butt thing, haha! The audience LOVED it :) "Believe" was great too!

Have a good rest for these 2 weeks and remember that there's band rehearsal on 13 Dec, fall-in at 11.30am. Drink loads of water, eat loads of healthy food because I know that the catered food has been really oily and enjoy this 2 week break! :D

Don't forget the gimmicks, practice over the weekend since all of you have brought home your instrument. And yes, practice what you have to.

Pity arh, next year when we're Sec 4 already, there'll only be 8 clarinetists left. So juniors MUST buck up okay, you're no longer a junior any time soon! You still have to guide the juniors next guide and set a good standard for them to achieve.

harlos.! im here to post abit.. hahhas.. okaye.. remember wadd mr lim say?? we shall jiayou as a section okaye?? hmm.. as for ticket sales. faith and i have been discussing when we were in compass..

our band has roughly 80ppl.. so lets calculate,
if one day everybody manage to sell at least 1 ticket,, then it will be 80 tickets.. =)
by 28th november,, which is 6 more days, it will be 6 X 80 = 480!
which means it will be fully packed!

jiayou in the ticket sales okaye? euu wont wann to perform in a hall with less than 400 ppl in the concert hall right? JIAYOU!

oh ya.. rmb ur funa uta.. mr lim will be testing tmr. we shall meet at 8am tmr xDD

Hi Everyone!today tutor came..things to take note =D
1)Change the low B fingering to what tutor suggest
2)practice running notes or semi quavers by changing the ryhthm
3)practice playing notes from low octave slur to high octave
4)try using toothbrush(soft)brush ACROSS ur reed

Please remember what Tutor and Mr Lim had said and do what you had written on ur scores.
Also,rmb to find the Famous Jazz Clarinet player!

I know im sec 4 cant say much la..but during sectional there are no discipline so...
Since there are no post, i may as well use this chance to post something. After posting happy things like having a chalet[section outing], i think its TIME to take note of sectionals already..as we know TIME IS PRECIOUS [for those who dunno or dun care or counting away the days happily might as well go bang the walls]...okay after SYF these old illnesses comes out again..
Seriously n Frankly sectionals ARE MUCH WORST then the last time

-LOOKING everywhere except Yun Han (busy' staring at the key holes in clarinet) "Whats there to stare about? Are there any worms coming out of the key holes? o.0"

-Treat what senior said as GARBAGE, ended up in garbage in, garbage out [go in left ear,come out right ear vice versa]"Woah ,your ear can do so much work ah? why let your ear work so hard that even one word of advice cannot even be swallow into your brain?"=.=

It's time to think

(for people who havent read it in the band web)
Band,

our motto has always been "Passionate Band Spirit" but don't you all feel that there seems to have no more passion in the band. If you guys have been noticing, ever since SYF, the discipline and the attitude of the band have been going down. With the poor discipline and attitude, it is going to pull down our music. So what if we are good in music, without the right attitude, we are nothing.

When was the last time we got a 100% in our attendance? How many times did we get a 100%? Twice, thrice? Only when we have other conductors coming to conduct or when we have an important event like the band convention? We understand that it's hard to get a 100% since there might be some people who are unwell, but for those who give excuses like they are tired, overslept or have to go to work, PLEASE think about the others who make the effort to come.

Take the speech day rehearsal held yesterday for example , only 31 members came.For those who came, we are very pleased. For those who have their personal reasons, it is okay.However, for those who didn't come simply beacuse they are tired,

THINK ABOUT THIS :

You think the members who came aren't? The majors aren't? Everyone is equally tired as you are but we do make the effort so why can't you?
With this little number of people, you think the band can sound good? You guys are just wasting the rest of the band's effort as the band won't be able to play well. Half of the band under the scorching sun while the other 19 doing what? sleeping?
Some say that that since it's the first rehearsal, there is no need to come as we won't play much but if the first rehearsal was not that important, why would be asking you guys to come?

If the band can have 100% on important events, why isin't there 100% on the speech day rehearsal. It is also an important event. The fact is, you guys simply don't care.

The seniors have brought up the band to a higher standard but now it's back to square one. There is only 40 days to ADDICTION 2 and if all of you still have that i-dont-care attitude, don't feel sad about the outcome as that is the effort you guys put in.
When u all say u all want to have a successful concert, don't talk only. Do it.
Action speaks louder than words. Practice hard and give it the best shot.

To have a successful addiction u need everyone's effort.If that one person, just that ONE person plays wrongly, or goes out of tune,the whole band will be affected.REMEMBER, THE BAND IS AS STRONG AS IT'S WEAKEST PLAYER. So do the best you can and practice hard.

Understand this, when it is not necessary, we do not ask you to come for so many practices but now, when ADDICTION 2 is so near. Is it still not necessary?

Currently Mr Lim is in Japan and will not be coming for band for a period of time.Does that mean you guys don't have to work hard? You guys want Mr Lim to feel disappointed when he returns? If no, then you know what to do.

Time is really running out and we have just the 40 days to change everything. We hope everyone will reflect upon themselves and do something about it. Remember, 40 days left. It's less than two months.
